PharmAthene was formed in 2001 to meet the critical needs of this Nation and its Allies by developing biological and chemical defense products. The Company is dedicated to the rapid development of important and novel biotherapeutics to address biological pathogens and chemicals that may be used as weapons of bioterror.
PharmAthene has been successful in obtaining critical funding to finance the development of its portfolio products. Including the funding provided to Avecia for its biodefense vaccine programs (acquired by PharmAthene in March 2008), the cumulative total value of all government funding awarded to PharmAthene and all PharmAthene-related biodefense products and technologies is approximately $485 million, provided that certain milestones are achieved and that all contract options and extensions are exercised by the government.
In addition, PharmAthene has raised approximately $65M in venture capital and private equity from premier healthcare investors, including: Bear Stearns Health Innoventures, HealthCare Ventures, LLC, MPM Capital, MDS Corporation, Ontario Teacher’s Pension Plan and Canadian Medical Discoveries Funds.
In August 2007, PharmAthene completed a reverse merger with Healthcare Acquisition Corp., a special purpose acquisition company. Shares of the company commenced trading on the American Stock Exchange under the new ticker symbol ‘PIP’ on August 7, 2007.
In March 2008, PharmAthene completed its acquisition of the biodefense vaccines business unit from Avecia, which includes a second generation recombinant Protective Antigen (rPA) anthrax vaccine, a recombinant dual antigen plague vaccine, and a third generation rPA anthrax vaccine program.
