Jeffrey W. Runge, M.D.
Director
Dr. Runge was appointed to the Company’s Board of Directors in December 2009. In addition to his service of nearly 30 years as a distinguished emergency
medicine physician, Dr. Runge has served for seven years as the head of two government agencies where he oversaw DHS biodefense programs and planning for
bioterrorism biological events. Dr. Runge is currently a Principal at The Chertoff Group, a firm providing business risk management and security and
security sector advisory services, and the President of Biologue, Inc., a consulting firm specializing in biodefense, medical preparedness and injury
prevention and control. Prior to joining Biologue, Dr. Runge served as Assistant Secretary for Health Affairs (from March 2007 through August 2008) and
Acting Undersecretary for Science and Technology (from February through August 2006) at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. From 2005 through
2008, Dr. Runge also served as the first Chief Medical Officer of the Department of Homeland Security, where he led the reorganization of biodefense
operations into a new Office of Health Affairs with a $157 million budget. Prior to joining DHS, Dr. Runge was the head of the National Highway Traffic
Safety Administration from August 2001 through September 2005 and Assistant Chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Carolinas Medical Center
in Charlotte, NC, from 1984 through 2001. Dr. Runge earned his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina and his undergraduate degree
from the University of the South.
