Director
James H. Cavanaugh, Ph.D. is a General Partner of HealthCare Ventures LLC. HealthCare Ventures LLC manages one of the largest venture capital funds devoted exclusively to health care. Among the companies founded by HealthCare Ventures are Human Genome Sciences, Inc., MedImmune Inc., and Genetic Therapy, Inc. Dr. Cavanaugh was formerly President of SmithKline & French Laboratories - U.S., the pharmaceutical division of SmithKline Beckman Corporation. Previously, he was President of SmithKline Beckman's clinical laboratory business and, before that, President of Allergan International. Prior to his industry experience, Dr. Cavanaugh helped shape national health policy in Washington. He served as Staff Assistant to The President for Health Affairs and as Deputy Director of the Domestic Council. Under President Ford, he was appointed Deputy Assistant to the President for Domestic Affairs and Deputy Chief of the White House Staff. Before his White House tour, he served as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Health and Scientific Affairs in the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare. Preceding his government service, Dr. Cavanaugh was a member of the faculty of the Graduate College and the College of Medicine at the University of Iowa where he received his master's and doctorate degrees. Currently, Dr. Cavanaugh serves on the Board of Directors of four publicly traded companies: Diversa Corporation, MedImmune, Inc., Vicuron, Inc. and as non-executive Chairman Shire Pharmaceuticals Group PLC. He also serves on the Board of the National Venture Capital Association. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association, Unihealth America, National Center for Genome Resources and the Proprietary Association, and was a Founding Director of the Marine National Bank in Santa Ana, California.
