John M. Gill
Director
Mr. Gill has served as a member of PharmAthene's Board of Directors and Chairman of its audit committee since February 2004. He is currently the President, Chief Executive Officer and a Director of TetraLogic Pharmaceuticals Corporation, a private biopharmaceutical company and is an advisor or director of other private companies and non-profit community organizations. Mr. Gill has previously held positions at 3-Dimensional Pharmaceuticals, SmithKline Beecham Research and Development and Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Company. Mr. Gill is a Certified Public Accountant and received his B.A. in Accounting and Economics from Rutgers University in 1975. He served in the United States Marine Corps from 1971 to 1973.
Brian A. Markison
Director
Mr. Markison was appointed to the Company’s Board of Directors in September 2011. He was recently appointed to the position of President and Chief Executive Officer for Nycomed U.S. which will be spun out from the acquisition of Nycomed A/S by Takeda Pharmaceuticals. Prior to joining Nycomed, A/S, Mr. Markison served as Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of King Pharmaceuticals, where he successfully led the Company through a $3.6 billion acquisition by Pfizer. Preceding his tenure at King, Mr. Markison held various executive leadership positions at Bristol-Myers Squibb, including, President of Oncology/ Virology and Oncology Therapeutics Network; Senior Vice President, Licensing & External Development and Mergers/Acquisitions; President, Neuroscience / Infectious Disease and Dermatology; and Vice President, Northeast Sales Primary Care. Mr. Markison currently serves on the Board of Directors of Immunomedics, Inc. and Rosetta Genomics, Ltd., where he also serves as Chairman of the Board. In addition, Mr. Markison serves on the Board of Directors for the Komen Foundation for South / Central New Jersey and on the Board of Trustees for the Pennington School. Mr. Markison received a B.S. degree from Iona College in New Rochelle, New York.
Joel McCleary
Director
Mr. McCleary has served as a White House Aide, Treasurer of the Democratic Party, and President of the Sawyer - Miller Group and the Institute for Asian Democracy. He has served as a consultant to the Department of State and advised the Presidents and Prime Ministers [or candidates for these offices] in Israel, Colombia, Philippines, Costa Rica, Nigeria, Greece, South Korea, Spain, Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Panama, and Ecuador on matters of political importance. As a private investor he co-founded Kava Pharmaceuticals Inc. with Dr. Peter Staats, Director of the John Hopkins University Pain Center and Raydiance Inc. with former AOL President Barry Schuler and former Amb. Steve Green. He serves on the Harvard Medical School's board of advisors and is an advisor to the Center for Biosecurity of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Mr. McCleary is currently Founding Partner, Four Seasons Ventures, LLC.
Eric I. Richman
Director
Mr. Richman has extensive experience in the development and commercialization of novel biotechnology-based therapeutics, including work at MedImmune, Inc. and Healthcare Ventures. Mr. Richman was part of the founding team at MedImmune, holding various administrative, financial, strategic planning, and marketing and international positions. Mr. Richman was responsible for the U.S. launch of MedImmune's first commercial product and was on the launch teams for its other products including international launch of Synagis®. Mr. Richman was a former Director of Lev Pharmaceuticals and serves as a Director of ADMA Biologics, Inc., and American Bank. Mr. Richman received a B.S. in Biomedical Science from the Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education (CUNY Medical School) and a Masters of Business Administration from the American Graduate School of International Management.
Jeffrey W. Runge, M.D.
Director
Dr. Runge was appointed to the Company’s Board of Directors in December 2009. In addition to his service of nearly 30 years as a distinguished emergency medicine physician, Dr. Runge has served for seven years as the head of two government agencies where he oversaw DHS biodefense programs and planning for bioterrorism biological events. Dr. Runge is currently a Principal at The Chertoff Group, a firm providing business risk management and security and security sector advisory services, and the President of Biologue, Inc., a consulting firm specializing in biodefense, medical preparedness and injury prevention and control. Prior to joining Biologue, Dr. Runge served as Assistant Secretary for Health Affairs (from March 2007 through August 2008) and Acting Undersecretary for Science and Technology (from February through August 2006) at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. From 2005 through 2008, Dr. Runge also served as the first Chief Medical Officer of the Department of Homeland Security, where he led the reorganization of biodefense operations into a new Office of Health Affairs with a $157 million budget. Prior to joining DHS, Dr. Runge was the head of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration from August 2001 through September 2005 and Assistant Chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC, from 1984 through 2001. Dr. Runge earned his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina and his undergraduate degree from the University of the South.
Mitchel Sayare, Ph.D.

Dr. Sayare was appointed to the Company’s Board of Directors in April 2010. Most recently, he served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of ImmunoGen, a publicly traded biotechnology company engaged in the research and development of antibody-based cancer therapeutics. During his tenure with ImmunoGen, Dr. Sayare was responsible for leading a successful IPO and raising over $300 million in venture capital and public equity financing for the company. Dr. Sayare also served as President of the 95%-owned ImmunoGen subsidiary, Apoptosis Technology, where he was responsible for managing operations for the organization. Prior to joining ImmunoGen, Dr. Sayare served as Vice President, Development at Xenogen, Inc., a biotechnology company specializing in monoclonal antibody-based diagnostic systems for cancer. In this role he oversaw all research and development, corporate development and investor relations responsibilities for the company. Dr. Sayare earned his Ph.D. in biochemistry from the Temple University School of Medicine and his undergraduate degree from Ursinus College.
Derace L. Schaffer, M.D.
Director
Dr. Schaffer is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of The Lan Group, a venture capital firm specializing in healthcare and high technology investments. Dr. Schaffer has been an active co-investor with Mr. Pappajohn for more than fifteen years on a variety of healthcare companies. In addition, Mr. Pappajohn and Dr. Schaffer have worked together on several private healthcare companies, including, Logisticare, Inc. and Source Medical Inc. Dr. Schaffer served as Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of Ide Imaging Group, P.C. from 1980 to 2001. Dr. Schaffer has served as a director on many healthcare boards of directors including several health systems and more than ten healthcare services and technology companies. Dr. Schaffer received his postgraduate radiology training at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital, where he served as Chief Resident. Dr. Schaffer currently is also a Clinical Professor of Radiology at Weill Cornell Medical College.
Steven St. Peter, M.D.
Director
Dr. Steven St. Peter joined MPM Capital in 2004, and he is a Managing Director based in the Boston office. His investment scope includes both venture and buyout transactions across the pharmaceuticals and medical technology industries. He has previous investment experience from Apax Partners and The Carlyle Group. Dr. St. Peter was previously an assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at Columbia University. He completed his Doctor of Medicine at Washington University and his residency and fellowship at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Prior to his medical training, he was an investment banker at Merrill Lynch. He also holds an M.B.A. from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and a B.A. in Chemistry from the University of Kansas. He is on the Board of the New England Venture Capital Association.
